Boyd’s Bear Country – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

boyds (Small)

On our massive Virginia road trip, I drove the kids up to Hershey, Pennsylvania to meet up with an old friend.  We visited Chocolate World (I have coined the trip Chocolate Disaster…that is for another post, another day!) and on the way home, we stopped for a potty break at Boyd’s Bear Country in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  When we stop for bathroom breaks, we try to avoid gas stations.  With small children, there is no easy way to keep your little ones from touching all sorts of nasty things in the bathroom.  By stopping at touristy places such as Boyd’s Bear Country, usually we can find a clean enough restroom that doesn’t make me cringe when I open the door.

After racing the little ones to the restroom (which was incredibly clean!), we wandered around a little bit.  I chose to stop here because the potty break timed well as we were driving past.  I wish that we had been able to spend a little bit more time here because the kids had a blast.  Everywhere you turn there was a Boyd’s Bear, mouse, moose, etc.

There is a restaurant where you can get a country buffet meal.  There were some great spots for the kids to wander as well.  The kid’s activities include an Adopt-a-Bear program and a place where you can actually make your own Boyd’s Bear.  Oh yeah…the fudge is divine!

That’s a good idea. I normally a type who wants to just get to the destination as fast as I can. I think I need to adopt that slower pace and make a pitstop more fun for them.

Adorable post. We just got back from a little road trip ourselves. The drive back should have taken 7 hours maybe. But we took 12! And the little guy never complained, the whole way, once. The slower pace really suited him, and then that made us all happy. Love your solution to avoiding gas stations!

Too bad technology hasn’t advanced to the stage where readers can smell and sample food like fudge. I avoid gas station bathrooms as well. They make me cringe no matter what country I’m in, even New Zealand.

Looks like you all had a fun trip. I like these little stops along the way as well. I’m interested to hear about your chocolate disaster!

The quest for clean bathrooms! 🙂 Seems like that is something modern GPS systems should have doesn’t it? Eager to hear about the Chocolate disaster trip.

I went to Hershey a million years ago. I remember the smell of chocolate in the air everywhere. However, I never made it to Boyds.

Now, with my son I’d love to do it!

I’m with you on the gas station restrooms as a general rule. My favorite gambit is to hit one of the big bookstores if I happen to see them along the way to use the bathroom. Boyd’s looks like a great stop.

Fudge…I’m there! I also found Hershey underwhelming. I wonder why we all keep going?

A good pitstop can be a fantastic find! Looks like you made the most of this one! Cute, huggable photos. 🙂
