Power of the Grocery Store

Don’t underestimate the power of the grocery store when vacationing!  I love to wander the aisles of a grocery store that is new and different from the ones in my hometown, where the most exciting grocery store is Publix.  It is no wonder that I get excited when I see a local grocery, a farmer’s market, a Whole Foods or a Fresh Market and the stores get added to the itinerary.  My kids love to wander the aisles themselves, looking for new candies or other treats that we might let them bring home.

On our last trip, we ended up at a Wegman’s by chance.  We had a wonderful time wandering through the the bakery section smelling the wonderful breads and sweet cookies.  There are more cheeses and olives than you can imagine!

Grocery stores are a great place to pick up the perfect souvenir to bring home for yourself, loved ones or your housesitter.  We have picked up hot sauce and pralines in New Orleans, beer at a hard to find microbrewery in Northern California, wine at the Biltmore, divinity and taffy in Savannah, and soups, coffees and teas in England and Germany.  It is the perfect gift because the receiver does not have to find a place to store it!

Making a trip to the grocery store is also a great way to save money.  Even if your hotel doesn’t have a kitchenette, you can still pick up sodas, juice and snacks to tide you over in between meals.  You can also pick up bread, meats, cheese, and peanut butter to make your own picnic lunches.

I like the idea of getting souvenirs at the grocery store. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to receive food or wine for a gift?

Snap! My kids love going to grocery stores – especially in other countries.
I think my favorite memory of a shopping expedition is the first time they saw raw chicken in a mexican supermarket. They were totally intrigued and wanted to know why the chicken looked different to the packaged product they see in US stores.

You are right, grocery going to stores is an amazing way of getting to know the place tha you are visiting.

I can’t think of a place I’ve visited where we haven’t gone into at least one grocery store. And Wegmans, oh it breaks my heart that we don’t have one of those here.

It’s one of the first places I visit, food can tell you alot about people and culture. This place looks yummy.

We usually wind up at a grocery store at some point on our travels, and I agree that it’s an interesting stop. You can learn all kinds of things along the tourist route, but the market is where you’ll get a feel for the local color. Thanks for sharing.

The souvenir idea is brilliant. Just to point out that many local supermarkets at least here in Ca have seating outside, so it’s a great alternative to a Mc Donalds stop.

I love, love going to grocery stores checking out different regional foods. We’re making some Taro pancakes this Saturday with some mix we found at a grocery store in Hawaii.

Totally agree, grocery stores are great to pick souvenirs and food for some of the meals during a trip. Mostly they are fantastic to get to know the popular food in the different countries or regions.

Grocery stores are among my favorite places to go for “souvenirs” of my travels. We’ve brought home barbecue sauce from Harris Teeter grocery store in SC (where we heard the clerks talking in Gullah dialect), hopped into a grocery store near Cincinnati to stock up on Skyline Chili in cans to take home (much cheaper than mail order or buying the gift packs at the restaurant)…I’m sure I’ll think of more later, but you get the picture!
I bet the kids love the trip 🙂

Wholeheartedly agree! An army marches on its stomach, especially little-people armies. I like the healthy food choices in grocery stores as well vs. the fast food, like Bridget mentions. We’ve gone a long way on deli turkey, cheese, bread and fruit!
