Three Waterfalls in North Carolina

When I think of North Carolina, my first thought is of the numerous and beautiful waterfalls.  Some can be seen from the street and others take a little walk or hike to get to.  While we were staying at the High Hampton Inn and Country Club in North Carolina, we took one of the rainy mornings to drive around and visit some waterfalls.  The High Hampton Inn provided us with a map of the area waterfalls and some of the staff shared their favorite waterfalls.  We visited three waterfalls in the Cashiers area: Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Silver Run Falls.

Dry Falls is really not that dry at all…hardy har har!

You can walk behind Dry Falls.

Then we stopped to snap a picture of Bridal Veil Falls.  You can drive under Bridal Veil Falls and at one point the highway actually went under the falls.  It isn’t that way anymore.  A few years ago, the road was damaged and closed.  It looked open when we were there, but I was going to take any chances!  We just stopped at the pull off on the side of the road.

Our last stop was Silver Run Falls.  You have to take a little walk to get to this waterfall.  It is kind of hard to see because all you see a a little sign like the one above and it seems like you just park on the side of the road.

Cashiers Romantic Vacation on raveable

They wear the headphones now!

When we first bought our current car, we tried out the headphones that came with our purchase.  No luck.  They were too young and wouldn’t keep them on.  We put them away and forgot about them.  We don’t play movies the entire trip so it isn’t a big deal to listen to them while they are watching one.  On our latest trip, Daddy J decided to give the headphones a try and wow…what a difference the drive was.  We listened to our music and they watched a movie and it was glorious!

Kayaking in Sandestin

My kids are still talking about their kayak trip at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.  Kayaks can be checked out for free for one hour a day with your room key.  It is a great amenity that saves you some dollars in activities!

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort hosted my family for two nights.  We paid for meals and transportation. My reviews are based solely on my experiences and opinion with no outside influence.

Impromptu Photo Shoot at Brookgreen Gardens

You would never guess their mother has a camera permamently wrapped around her neck, would you?

I snapped this picture at the Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on our last vacation.  Some of my favorite living room wall worthy pictures of my kids were taken on our vacations!

My Little Guppies

It has been quiet around Two Kids and a Map this week.  Besides having to deal with the last week of school things, Oma and Opa from Germany were in town for the week.  We relaxed lots, had a nice dinner out and played soccer but what the kids will remember the most is playing in the hotel pool with them!

The Behind of the Zebra

For some reason whenever I see a zebra, he is always showing his behind…the kids think it is hilarious.

Hurricane Katrina Memorial

katrina1

While in Biloxi, MS I made sure that we found the Hurricane Katrina Memorial located across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel.  The memorial is dedicated to the Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Katrina.  It was part of an Extreme Home Makeover project and was unveiled in February of 2006.  There is a mosaic wave symbolizing Katrina’s storm surge and a glass case containing mementoes shared by residents of the Gulf Coast.

There is also a beautiful sculpture carved from a tree.  There are over 50 of these sculptures carved from trees that were damaged during the hurricane.

From Mountains to Beaches

After three months of solid school days, day after day after day, we finally had our spring break last week.  I had the opportunity to visit both the High Hampton Inn and Country Club in the mountains of Cashiers, North Carolina and then we headed to the beach and stayed at the Holiday Inn Club Vacations South Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach.

From mountains…

High Hampton

…to beaches in the same week.  We are one lucky family.

New Orleans As Seen Through My Six Year Old’s Eyes

New Orleans is one of those cities where you are going to do a lot of walking.  You just can’t get around it.  Sure there are street cars and cabs, but you are still going to do a ton of walking.  Like I said the other day in my hiking post, my kids whine and whine and whine walking around the city even though they will run and play at parks and go for nature walks for hours.  Well, I think I might have found the cure for the whining…at least a temporary one!

After a long morning of trekking all over the city (and whining by two whiny children), we took a break to snap a few pictures.  My son took a picture of me and my daughter.

And then my daughter (the 4 year old) took one of me and my son:

Then they proceeded to fight over who was going to get the camera next.  You know these moments I am talking about…the ones where you start throwing treats or threats or promises at your kids because you just can’t stand to listen to it any longer?  Anything to make them stop what they are doing?  Oh wait…don’t you have those moments occasionally?  Despite my reservations, I was so over the whining and arguing that I decided to do something rash.

I gave my 6 year old son my camera.  My fancy Canon DSLR camera.

And then my daughter started to whine because she wanted a turn.

So my son suggested I give her my phone.

My “this is a big splurge because I had a cell phone that hardly even sent texts until the end of last year” Android phone.

And I did.  And then we continued to walk.

We walked from the Audubon Aquarium to the Audubon Insectarium.  We spent an hour exploring the Insectarium.  Then we headed towards the hotel by way of several detours.  All the while, my children were happily snapping pictures and I didn’t hear a single whiny word out of them.  The ENTIRE time we walked all over New Orleans.

I call this series of photos New Orleans As Seen through my Six Year Old’s Eyes
